They Gave Everything for Us

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

--John McCrae

What quarrel, against which foe, what torch, will you carry on their behalf, knowing how they carried yours?

Be careful what you ask for. . . ;-)

Actually I would like to think that most war veterans would approve of my ongoing "war of words" quarrel with UU foes, especially when it comes to my fighting against continuing attempts by hypocritical UUs to cynically suppress or otherwise degrade and deny the precious rights and freedoms that our veterans fought for. . .

As for myself, I saw Dick Cheney on TV glowering over the ceremonies at Arlington Cemetery with Gale Norton and a bunch of those other crypto-fascist chickenhawks, and I felt a bilious disgust. Our heroes did not die so that these treacherous plutocrats could steal elections, restrict our freedoms, and lie and torture with impunity. The torch our fallen heroes threw to us, I think, is the duty to defend liberty from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

Especially domestic.

To have liberty we must be prepared to defend it any time that it is threatened whether from the Right or the Left. I am no fan of Dick Cheney or a Michael Moore or their ilk . The truth is enough me !

I am not a fan of Michael Moore's methods either, but I do see him as a defender of liberty and democratic-republican (small 'd', small 'r') institutions, not a foe of them like Cheney et al. Moore and Cheney are not the same 'ilk' by any measure. Moore may be a misguided patriot, but Cheney and Bush and their ilk are theiving, bloodthirsty traitors to democracy, who desecrate the memory of all those who gave their lives to preserve our liberty.

Yes, Bush too. Bush especially. His speech yesterday in defense of his dishonestly justified patrician's war to be fought by the plebs only was an outrage, as was his conspicuous absence from Arlington in order to deliver it, as was his sending of Chickenhawk "Other Priorities" Cheney in his stead.

Sorry, Avenger. This is the wrong thread for those points. Just because you can think up a segue to relate the issues raised here to your own concerns doesn't mean your concerns are responsive to the ones raised here.

And no, I'm not "memory holing" you. You're still free to post whatever you like on your own blog.

That's twice now Fausto. I guess that makes me a theist in a "memory hole". . . ;-)

No, it just means that this is the wrong thread for those points.
